Thousands of new sales, administration and office jobs could be created at the site of the London Gateway. The £1.5 billion development is currently under construction near Thurrock in Essex and will be the first new deep sea container port in Britain for 25 years. According to prime minster Gordon Brown, this "world class" project should create lots of new jobs and drive future economic growth in the region. "The London Gateway is a significant foreign investment into the UK," he commented. "It is a massive vote of confidence in the UK's economic recovery." According to the latest official figures, Britain's economy contracted by 0.2 per cent between July and September 2009. Business secretary Lord Mandelson added that the project could potentially lead to about 36,000 new jobs being created. This, he said, would send a message to companies across the world that Britain is the best European country in which to invest.
