Government aims to get young people into workYoung people looking for sales or administration jobs in London could be about to benefit from a renewed focus on youth employment from the government.

Work and pensions secretary Yvette Cooper said the government is determined to do everything it can to help young people get ahead.

She has therefore urged businesses across the UK to create more jobs, apprenticeships or training opportunities.

According to the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB), smaller firms are currently leading the fight against youth unemployment.

"At least one in five says they are keen to take on graduate interns and the majority would like to take on an apprentice," said national chairman John Wright.

He added that many small businesses are also willing to take on apprentices, as apprenticeships are "vital for fostering skills" that could strengthen a firm during the recession.

Figures from the FSB show that small firms employ nearly two-thirds of the UK's private sector workforce.
