Employers 'should judge on skills alone'Recruiters for positions such as office and administration jobs should not consider factors beyond the candidate's skills and abilities, an expert has said.

According to Steve Williams of conciliation service Acas, there are no legal rules around the issue of weight discrimination in the workplace.

However, a study by Slimming World has suggested that many overweight people are not being taken on by many recruiters.

This was said to be employers believe they are lazy and lack self-control.

Mr Williams said that while employers are not actually breaking the law, a person's weight should not be a factor to recruiters.

"We would always urge employers to judge on skills and abilities alone and not make assumptions," he commented.

The Slimming World research also found that one in ten male bosses have already rejected a candidate on the basis of their weight, while one in four would be prepared to do so.
