Parents in office and administration jobs in the city of London may find flexible working opportunities especially helpful in their busy lives. As a result, the TUC has welcomed the government's latest statement that it plans to create more opportunities of this kind for mums and dads in Britain. Brendan Barber, general secretary of the group, said this could be a great relief to working parents who are trying to combine a job or career with raising their children. The proposals are geared partly towards handing more rights to men, which means they will be able to give employers less notice to take paternity leave. Mr Barber said this would allow more fathers to spend "valuable time with their new families". "Any moves that make it easier for men to get more involved with the care and development of their children are to be welcomed," he commented. Meanwhile, the TUC has welcomed the latest unemployment figures, which indicate a drop to 2.46 million in the three months to November 2009. Mr Barber said this demonstrates that government investment is the best way to secure a sustained upturn in the economy.
