Worst is over in jobs market, says IESPeople aged 40-plus who are looking for jobs in London have been advised that the recent slump in the employment market may be over.

This week, official figures revealed that unemployment dropped by 7,000 during the three months to November 2009 to 2.46 million - the first decrease since May 2008.

According to the Institute for Employment Studies (IES), the data suggests that the worst of the recent decline in the UK jobs market has now passed.

The organisation also noted that the performance of the jobs market has been relatively strong in comparison to what had been expected by some economists.

"If you compare what has happened month-by-month in this recession with what has happened month-by-month in previous recent recessions, the labour market has performed better this time," said Thomas Usher, research fellow at the IES.

Employment minister Jim Knight has also welcomed the recent drop in unemployment.

He said the UK has recently seen the largest number of people coming off unemployment benefit for 15 years.

This, he stated, is a sign that the government's £5 billion investment in getting people back to work is having an effect.
