Britons aged 40-plus who are looking for jobs in London could soon have more employment opportunities available to them. The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) is calling for employment laws to be revised so that older people have more of a chance to find work. Baroness Margaret Prosser, deputy chair of the body, said this is necessary because the system needs to reflect the demographics of today's ageing population. Indeed, she noted that the existing system was established when people typically died shortly after reaching state pension age. The EHRC has therefore called for the default retirement age to be scrapped, as well as the introduction of tighter anti-discrimination rules and more flexible working policies. Baroness Prosser said: "Employers with a focus on recruiting and retaining older workers on flexible working arrangements are telling us it makes good business sense." She added that the wider economy would also benefit from reduced welfare costs and older people having greater spending power. This comes after equality minister Harriet Harman warned that ageism in the workplace is costing the British economy an estimated £31 billion a year.
