Mature workers in office and administration jobs should remain subject to the default retirement age, a business group has stated. The Forum of Private Business (FPB) said it recognises that older workers make a very valuable contribution to the economy. As a result, it has no objection to them working beyond the age of 65 should they and their employer wish them to do so. However, it stated that scrapping the default retirement age could create problems for businesses, as retaining older staff members could hinder their ability to plan for the future. Phil Orford, chief executive of the FPB, commented: "At the moment, there is nothing to stop anyone from working beyond 65, providing it suits both parties. "The current law works perfectly well, so why tamper with it?" He warned that scrapping the default retirement age would take more control away from business owners and make employment law even more complex. This comes after the British Chambers of Commerce urged the government to stop its "constant tinkering" with employment legislation.
