Gordon Brown hails value of older workers People in 50-plus jobs still have plenty to offer to society, the prime minister has said.

The ageing population has been the topic for lengthy debate in recent months, as the government and industry look to come to terms with the likelihood that around ten per cent of the UK's workforce will be over 60 within 20 years.

Questions have been raised about how the pensions system and NHS will cope with the change, but Gordon Brown insisted society should welcome the increasing influence of older people.

In a speech to the King's Fund thinktank, the Labour leader said that both families and communities as a whole would benefit from what older people have to offer.

Mr Brown urged companies to start changing their attitudes towards older workers, in order to create a society which "never sees age as a bar to success or to a meaningful contribution but rather makes the most of people's talents for the whole of their lives".

A recent study by the Equality and Human Rights Commission found that people in 50-plus jobs are confident in their own abilities and still have career ambitions, with more than twice as many interested in gaining promotion as in switching to part-time hours.
