Consumers urged to plan ahead for retirementPeople in 50-plus jobs have been advised to plan ahead for their post-working life.

According to the Chartered Insurance Institute (CII), consumers cannot afford to do nothing when it comes to saving up for retirement.

Indeed, CII spokesperson Lucy Grubb said ignoring the issue is the "one of the worst things" a person can do.

She has therefore advised people without a pension plan to seek professional advice on how they can manage their finances most effectively.

"Pensions are a very important part of financial planning," Ms Grubb commented.

"For most people, providing for their retirement is the single most important financial plan they can make."

Ms Grubb was speaking after research by Moneyfacts showed that pension income has fallen by almost three-quarters over the last decade.

Whereas the figure stood at almost £9,000 per annum in January 2000, it has now fallen to just over £2,540.

This could lead to greater demand for 50-plus jobs in Britain, as many older people may be unable to afford giving up work.
