Demand for staff in 40-plus jobs could be set to rise in the future thanks to future investment in the global space programme.According to the Space Innovation and Growth Strategy report, the UK is in a prime position to benefit from funding for the sector - which is forecast to total £400 billion in 20 years' time. Analysts responsible for the study claimed that this could lead to 100,000 new jobs being created across the country, which could lead to a surge in demand for people in 40-plus jobs who work in the IT and telecoms sectors. Chairman of trade association UKspace Richard Peckham explained that there is more to the space sector than building satellites and propulsion systems. "A lot of what we're calling space is enabled through the infrastructure, but we don't really think of these as space jobs," he said. If the predictions are correct it would provide a further boost for the technology sector, which enjoyed a strong 2009 despite the impact of the economic downturn. The professional IT and telecoms workforce has expanded at double the UK average rate over the past eight years and currently stands at 1.1 million.
