People in 40-plus jobs who also look after elderly relatives could be handed more support from the government.According to official estimates, about one in seven people in regular employment have caring responsibilities. Forecasts suggest that this figure could increase significantly over the next ten years, as the number of people needing care is expected to almost double during this time. The government has therefore said it will work to offer more support for carers in the workplace and ensure employers are given appropriate guidance on the issue. Care services minister Phil Hope commented: "I hope all employers will recognise the benefits of being carer-friendly." He stated that options such as flexible working and short-term emergency leave could help carers to stay in work, thereby allowing companies to retain their experience. This comes after the Audit Commission warned that councils may find it difficult to meet the cost of social care if life expectancy continues to rise. Posted by Mary King
