Employers sceptical about fit notesMeasures to reduce absence rates among employees, including those in 50-plus jobs, have been met with a cold response from bosses.

The government's fit note scheme, which allows doctors to decide whether a person is fit to return to work and carry out certain tasks, will replace the sick note next month.

However, a survey by Aviva UK Health has found that one in ten employers believe it will be difficult to administer this policy.

As a result, only five per cent believe the fit note scheme will help to reduce absence rates.

The survey also revealed that more than two-thirds have little or no knowledge of the upcoming policy changes.

Dr Hugh Laing, chief medical officer at Aviva UK Health, admitted he is "concerned" by this apparent lack of awareness of fit notes.

"Employers have a vital role to play in the success of fit notes, so it's important they are given the appropriate training to enable them to do this," he commented.

This comes after Dame Carol Black, the government's national director for health and work, said the fit note is a "hugely important" development that benefits both employers and members of staff.
