The British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) has urged the government to take action on getting people into 40-plus jobs.According to the business group, the government should use the forthcoming Budget to introduce measures that will make it easier for firms to take on new employees. This, it stated, could include scrapping the planned hike in employer National Insurance Contributions, and substituting it with a one per cent increase in VAT. David Kern, chief economist at the BCC, said this should be the government's "top priority". He was speaking after official figures revealed that unemployment in the UK dropped by 33,000 during the three months to January 2009, taking the overall figure down to 2.45 million. Mr Kern said these statistics are "better than expected" and "strongly reflect the sacrifices made by businesses and workers in restraining pay". The CBI has also welcomed this development, but insisted that the labour market in the UK is still very fragile.
