Not enough over-50s on TV, says reportPeople in 50-plus jobs are not seeing enough individuals of their own age on television, a new report has concluded.

According to research commissioned by Anchor, over-50s are under-represented on British TV screens.

The study showed that only 27 per cent of the actors and presenters on ITV1 are aged over 50, along with 20 per cent of those on BBC1.

Jane Ashcroft, chief executive of Anchor, said this demonstrates how the UK "dramatically" undervalues the contribution older people make to society.

"This problem is perpetuated by the media's fixation with youth," she commented.

Ms Ashcroft added that the fact over-50s are not represented more fairly on television is "scandalous".

However, the research did show a higher proportion of over-50s on BBC2, as 37 per cent of people on its programmes fall into this demographic.

The BBC's attitude towards older people has recently come under the spotlight after Strictly Come Dancing judge Arlene Phillips was replaced by singer and former contestant Alesha Dixon.
