Millions of Britons putting off retirementDemand for 40-plus jobs could be set to rise after a survey found that many people are putting off their retirement.

Research by Prudential revealed that almost three million people aged over 45 plan to retire later rather than sooner.

Respondents to the survey said this is partly because of the effects of the recession, while others said they need more time to put money into a pension.

Meanwhile, some of the people polled stated that they are putting off their retirement because of a personal financial emergency.

Prudential has therefore urged those of working age to plan for their financial futures so they are not forced to stay in 40-plus jobs.

"It is imperative for people to realise what's at stake before they come to retire," said spokesman Martyn Bogira.

"Do you really want to work an extra five years beyond the date you could retire?"

This comes after a study by The Children's Mutual found that many people are postponing their retirement in order to give financial support to their adult children.
