New research has found that British businesses could have to pay £2.6 billion in employment tribunal costs over the next three years. The Employment Tribunal Trends Index study by law firm Dickinson Dees shows that companies will face an additional 370,000 tribunal cases in the coming three years - a 46 per cent rise in comparison to the period between 2007 and 2010. According to Dickinson Dees, the quantity of tribunals since their introduction in 1998 has risen at a rate of around 20,000 per year and this trend will continue for the foreseeable future. The average tribunal, including court costs and settlements, costs around £7,000. The research reveals that better knowledge of workers' rights, higher damages being available and the implementation of new laws - such as the recent equality bill - have all played their role in increasing the amount of tribunals annually. James Wilders, an employment partner at Dickinson Dees, said: "We expect the trend of rising tribunal numbers to continue upwards and it may well accelerate due to various new employment law changes expected over the next few years."
