Gordon Brown has revealed that Labour would keep the basic rate income tax at its current level of 20p should Labour win the May 6th general election. While defending the government's proposed National Insurance (NI) contribution increase in an interview on Channel 4, the prime minister stated that all three bands of income tax - basic, higher and top - would not rise over the course of his possible new five-year term in office. In response the Conservatives' assertion that the NI rise is a tax on jobs, the prime minister insisted that the compulsory one per cent NI hike for those earning over £20,000 was necessary to protect the NHS, police and schools. Mr Brown's decision to announce an income tax freeze comes in the wake of David Cameron's pledge that NI would not be increased under a Conservative government. This has attracted the support of many of Britain's most prominent business leaders - including the chief executives of J Sainsbury and Marks & Spencer - and has seen the party forge ahead in recent opinion polls.
