Labour would scrap default retirement ageThe default retirement age (DRA) of 65 would be scrapped if the current government retains power in the general election, it was announced today (12th April).

In Labour's 2010 election manifesto, the party outlines its plans to end the current DRA, which was introduced in October 2006 and received heavy criticism from age campaign groups who argued that it could be used as an excuse for employers to get rid of older staff.

A Future Fair For All states that "a right to request flexible working for older workers with an end to default retirement at 65, enabling more people to decide for themselves how long they choose to keep working" would be introduced.

It was widely expected that the government would conduct analysis of whether the DRA should remain later in the year following a review of evidence from various employers groups.

Employment relations minister Lord Young said in February: "We will look at the weight of evidence and make a decision in the summer, alongside publishing a survey of employers' policies and practice with respect to age."
