65% of UK firms 'oppose a hung parliament'Almost two-thirds of British firms are apprehensive about the potential impact that a hung parliament would have on business, according to new figures.

The latest Monthly Business Survey from the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) has revealed that 65 per cent of the 300 companies polled are either "concerned" or "very concerned" by the possibility of there being no clear winner in the May 6th general election. These concerns are primarily down to the perceived negative impact on strong decision-making this would have in the wake of the recession.

Just over one-fifth (22 per cent) said that they were "not concerned" by the prospect, while 13 per cent indicated that they thought it might be "a good thing" for business.

Following February's feedback from businesses, which found that firms believe the proposed National Insurance hike would be the most damaging tax rise for them, the BCC claims that March's results confirm its opinion that this measure should be replaced by a one per cent rise on VAT.

David Frost, director general of the BCC, said: “Businesses are right to be wary about the prospect of a hung parliament. With our economy still fragile and the public finances in a dire state, the overwhelming concern is whether a hung parliament will provide decisive action around the UK's unsustainable deficit."
