| UBS to start London recruitment drive |

 European banking giant UBS has announced that it is looking to hire hundreds of new staff following the publication of positive first quarter results.Following a torrid period during and in the aftermath of the recession, which has seen the company shed around 17,000 staff since 2007, the Guardian reports today (May 5th) that the Swiss-based firm is determined to build on its reported profits of £1.3 billion in the first three months of the year by bringing in many new traders and bankers across its international operations. In a clear sign that confidence is returning to the sector both at home and abroad, UBS's planned staff expansion includes the creation of new jobs at its London base. The firm also said that it is in negotiations with British Land about the possibility of building a new UK headquarters at its Broadgate offices in the City, which currently houses 6,300 of its staff. Chief executive Oswald Grubel also indicated that the firm was optimistic about the second quarter of 2010 and stated that the company is "well positioned to meet its medium-term goals".
