The next government must make cutting Britain's budget deficit its main priority regardless of who is in power, according to an expert. Following the result of a hung parliament from yesterday's general election, for the first time since 1974 there is no majority government in power. This means that parties must try to strike deals with each other to form a coalition government and the Conservatives, who gained the most constituencies around the country but fell short of the required 326 to form a government, are currently in negotiations with the Liberal Democrats to do that. Many business leaders have labelled the outcome as negative for UK businesses as it could mean a lack of strong leadership in a time of economic crisis. Nevertheless, Pierre Williams, head of research at Money Expert, believes that it is vital that the parties act collectively in order to manage the nation through the problems. "The big issue is being able to agree and present a coherent plan after the election - it shouldn't be a time for party political posturing but for all politicians to work together," said Mr Williams. "We clearly cannot go on like this and the next government has to focus on tackling the deficit as soon as possible." Posted by James Strang
