Almost three-quarters of Britain's human resources (HR) professionals do not want the default retirement age (DRA) to be changed, a new study has revealed.Following the hung parliament outcome of last Thursday's (May 6th) general election, the Conservatives - who won the most constituency seats - and the Liberal Democrats are locked in talks over the possibility of forming a coalition government. Both parties indicated their wish to scrap the DRA should they be elected in their respective manifestos published last month. However, according to the 2010 IRS retirement procedures survey published by XpertHR, some 72 per cent of workers in the HR sector oppose such plans due to the fact that it would force firms to pay pension contributions for longer, reduce workforce capability and impede succession planning. Meanwhile, the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development has announced its support for calls from equality campaigners for whoever forms to next government to provide clear guidance on about how to implement any proposed DRA changes. Dianah Worman, diversity adviser at the CIPD, told Personnel Today: "The next government needs to find out what challenges HR are still facing and then give ideas and guidance about how to change and move forward."
