Hung parliament 'could increase EU power in UK'European Union influence on employment legislation in the UK could be heightened following the result of last Thursday's (May 6th) general election, an expert has said.

According to Martin Warren, practice group head at the human resources group of law firm Eversheds, a hung parliament, whereby there will be no clear majority government, is also likely to impact on the country's industrial action laws.

"Throughout their pre-election campaign, the Conservatives were vocal about their intention to reduce the EU's influence on UK employment laws, but the reality is that this is a very difficult aspiration to implement for both legal and political reasons," he said.

He added that David Cameron's plans to change the balance of power on employment law was a "non-starter" if his party agree a coalition with the Liberal Democrats.

Meanwhile, due to the fact that the new government will inevitably seek to reduce the budget deficit through cut, trade unions may to respond with "significant industrial action" added Warren.
