Over half of small businesses 'have lost confidence'A poll published today (May 11th) by has shown that the result of the general election has left more than half of the UK's small businesses feeling insecure.

According to the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB), some 54 per cent of these firms have now halted plans to expand and introduce new services and products after last Thursday's election did not yield an overall winner, therefore creating a hung parliament whereby there is no majority party eligible to run the country alone.

Furthermore, 52 per cent of the 3,200 respondents indicated that they now lacked confidence in the economy due to the lack of clear leadership in parliament and around 70 per cent said that whichever parties end up joining forces to form the next government, reducing the deficit must be a legislative priority.

John Walker, national chairman of the FSB, said: "These figures worryingly show that small firms have lost confidence in the economy following the outcome of the election just as the business community was beginning to recover from the downturn.

Walker added that small businesses require government to help them during the ongoing economic troubles.
