BCC urges coalition to scrap NI riseThe British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) has urged the newly-formed Conservative and Liberal Democrat coalition government to scrap the proposed rise in National Insurance (NI) contributions.

Under plans unveiled earlier this year by the former government, Labour said it planned to recoup some of the country's deficit by increasing the compulsory contribution to NI by one per cent for all workers earning £20,000 and above.

This move was immediately opposed by the Conservatives - who branded it a "tax on jobs" - and the BCC has called on the party with the majority of seats in the new government to fulfill its pledge to throw-out the legislation as the coming months are vital to the country's recovery. The proposal also attracted the opposition of hundreds of Britain's biggest business leaders.

David Frost, director-general of the BCC, said: "They must follow through on their promise to roll back the planned employer NI rise in any emergency Budget.

"We need concrete proposals to reduce red tape and tax burdens on business and commitments to improve Britain's key business infrastructure."
