EFA angered by plans to The Employers Forum on Age (EFA) has today (May 13th) expressed its anger about new plans to "phase out" the default retirement age (DRA).

Prime minister David Cameron and his deputy Nick Clegg yesterday confirmed that the DRA would not be scrapped entirely by the new Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition government, despite the Conservatives' pre-election pledge to do so.

Also, the new government had set dates of 2016 for men and 2020 for women at the earliest when the state pension age will be raised to 66.

However, Rachel Krys, campaign director for the EFA, said: "We are really disappointed to hear that the new government only intends to phase out the DRA, and believes that this could be a missed opportunity to ensure that age cannot be used to arbitrarily dismiss people.

"The DRA is fundamentally discriminatory, based on the assumption that age affects someone's ability to do their job."

Ms Krys also criticised both parties involved in the coalition for not immediately following through on their manifesto commitments to look into ending the DRA as soon as they gained power.
