Small firms 'want coalition to tackle deficit'The majority of small businesses in the UK want the newly-formed government to prioritise the reduction of the country's deficit, a new survey released today (May 17th) has found.

Following chancellor George Osborne's announcement that the emergency budget will take place on June 22nd, the Federation for Small Businesses (FSB) has revealed that over nine in ten (93 per cent) of the nation's smaller firms believe that the Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition must outline plans to reduce the deficit sooner rather than later.

As well as this figure, some 66 per cent of the 1,319 respondents feel that fuel duty cuts would aid the country's recovery, while 36 per cent want to see an increase on the personal tax threshold.

John Walker, national chairman of the FSB, said that the organisation's members are keenly awaiting the government's announcement on how it will go about helping business growth while simultaneously cutting the deficit.

"We urge the government not to place further taxation burdens on small businesses at a time when the recovery is fragile," he said.
