New research suggests that more people are now turning to part-time work in the wake of the recession due to the full-time job market's ongoing but slow recovery.According to the Institute for Public Policy Research, around one million Brits are now working on part-time contracts, a 40 per cent rise on the figures seen at the outset of the economic downturn. However, it seems that older workers are managing to cope best in the current permanent jobs market, as nearly one-quarter (22 per cent) of the people working part-time belong to the 16 to 24 age group. Steve Huxham, chairman of the Recruitment Society, said: "With the older people, it is probably because they are simply under-using their expertise. "None of it is ideal, but it is potentially a much bigger issue for the younger age group." Meanwhile, the number of men in part-time roles has gone up by 53 per cent since the start of the recession, while this figure is 46 per cent for women. Posted by Daniel Frost
