Executives believe that the new government's plans to reduce public sector spending should include widespread outsourcing from Whitehall to the private sector, new research has shown today (May 18th). According to a study conducted by Interim Partners, over one-quarter (29.7 per cent) of interim executives polled advocate that the Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition should prioritise facilitating the private sector to fulfil some of the functions that are currently taken care of internally. Meanwhile, increasing investment in IT - and thereby reducing the number of staff needed - was recommended by over one-fifth (21 per cent) of the executives asked, as was introducing tougher staff targets, with 20.6 per cent stating that this would make financial sense for the government. Professionals are apparently divided over whether the expected £6 billion public sector spending cuts will affect the sector's usage of interims, with 38 per cent each believing that the public arena would use the same number or more. Doug Baird, managing director of Interim Partners, said: "However deeply the next government decides to cut public sector spending, savings need to be balanced against service quality."
