68 per cent of Brits 'will work past the retirement age'More than 33 million workers intend to stay in employment past their current standard retirement age, new research has revealed.

According to Aviva's Real Retirement Report, 29 per cent of UK adults expect to stop working between the ages of 66 and 70, while 12 per cent will continue past 70 and a further ten per cent believe they will never stop.

The main reason given for remaining in employment was to improve financial standing, which was cited by 60 per cent of people, while a further 54 per cent said they will continue to work so as not to get in their partner's way at home.

Clive Bolton, at-retirement director for Aviva Life, said that plans to raise the retirement age may not have the impact many were expecting.

"Government proposals mean that the state retirement age is set to increase over the next few years, but it appears that many UK adults already see themselves working well past the traditional retirement age," he added.

The research comes after the Friends Provident Visions of Britain 2020 study, which predicted that the number of employees aged 55 and above will increase from 5.14 million today to 7.16 million by 2020.
