Small business 'must be supported by government'Britain's smaller firms must be aided by the new government in next month's emergency budget, the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) said today (May 19th).

With chancellor George Osborne's first budget of the Conservative-Liberal Democrat alliance set for June 22nd and the government seemingly set to introduce widespread cuts, businesses throughout the UK are facing a nervous wait to find out how they will be affected.

However, regardless of the need to reduce the country's deficit, Sara Lee, a spokesperson for the FSB, has said that it is crucial for the government to help small companies through the recession by supporting them financially.

While the FSB supports measures to scrap the former government's proposed national insurance contribution rise - a move it says could save over 50,000 jobs - it has also urged Mr Osborne to ask Britain's banks to loosen their lending criteria.

"Access to financial credit would be of the greatest benefit. Small firms are looking at cash flow and taking more staff on. In the recovery phase, they will need to borrow to do that," said Ms Lee.
