Whitehall savings 'are government's priority'One of the main facets of the government's plans to cut public spending over the next year is the establishment of a new group that is intended to begin making savings in Whitehall immediately.

The chancellor, George Osborne, gave a speech yesterday (May 24th) on how the government will go about making good of its pre-election promise to shed upwards of £6 billion from the country's public sector expenditure over the next year.

Included in this was the pledge to form a new joint Treasury-Cabinet Office group to monitor and reduce the perceived over-spending currently made by the government's offices at Whitehall.

The Efficiency and Reform Group, which will be chaired by David Laws - the chief secretary to the Treasury - and Cabinet Office and paymaster general Francis Maude, will have the power to ensure that governmental departments work together in order to ensure that waste across all areas is tackled.

Francis Maude said: "We have got to get an immediate grip on Whitehall waste if we’re going to tackle this unprecedented £156 billion deficit quickly, while protecting the quality of important front line services and getting the economy growing."
