Osborne has made sensible decisions, says CIPDChancellor George Osborne's public spending cuts worth more than £6.2 billion have been welcomed by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD).

The Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition yesterday (May 24th) announced its plans on how it will begin to reduce the country's estimated deficit of £136 billion by making widespread spending cuts in the public sector over the next year.

These proposals include shedding £836 million from the budget of the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills and over £0.5 billion from the Department of Work and Pensions.

Such measures have been criticised by some observers as a rushed tactic to reduce the deficit that will only serve to seriously damage the country's public sector in the long-term due to the job losses it will cause.

CIPD chief economic adviser Dr John Philpott has said that Mr Osborne has made "sensible decisions" on where and how public spending needed to be cut.

"Quangos, IT, consultancy, advertising and property have long been ripe for cuts," he said.
