David Cameron paid less than 173 civil servantsDavid Cameron is paid a lower annual wage than over 170 civil servants, new statistics released yesterday (May 31st) have shown.

In an unprecedented step, the Cabinet Office has displayed its eagerness to increase the levels of accountability in the public sector by publishing the names, wages, salary level and grade of all senior Whitehall civil servants earning more than £150,000 per year.

And the figures reveal that 173 civil servants are paid in excess of Prime Minister Cameron's salary of £142,500. Heading the list is David Nich, chief executive of the NHS, who is paid £255,000 every year including expenses.

Immediately after forming a government, the Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition outlined its determination to increase transparency in the public sector in order to boost the public's confidence in politicians following such incidences as the expenses scandal.

According to Francis Maude, minister for the Cabinet Office, this move is "pulling back the curtains to let light into the corridors of power" and all governmental departments will follow suit in the coming weeks.
