New research has found that more than half of the UK's employers are considering introducing flexible working policies during this summer's World Cup. According to law firm DLA Piper, 51 per cent of companies are looking into the possibility of allowing staff to alter their start and finish times and attendance in order to watch the action from South Africa, which gets underway on June 11th. Of the 352 business leaders and human resources professionals questioned, one-third said they would allow shift swapping while over half - 59 per cent - are to permit early finishes. However, despite this approach to minimising the impact the tournament will have on productivity during England matches, less than one-fifth of employers are prepared to extend these same policies to include games where Fabio Capello's team are not involved. Also, over three-quarters do not plan to offer flexible working plans to members of staff who do not follow football. Tim Marshall, head of employment and partner at DLA Piper, said: "By failing to offer staff who follow teams other than England the same opportunities for flexible working, employers are potentially opening themselves up to allegations of discrimination."
