Experts warn against EHRC pay gap plansExperts have today (June 2nd) warned that calls from the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) to close the gender pay gap quickly could prove counterproductive in the long run.

According to EHRC research released last week to coincide with the 40th anniversary of the introduction of the Equal Pay Act, shows that female workers are still paid some 16.4 per cent less than their male colleagues.

The organisation added that this situation is not conducive to strong business performance, as it is estimated by the Women and Work Commission that increasing female participation in the country's labour force is potentially worth up to £23 billion for the British economy as a whole.

Jean Irvine, commissioner at the EHRC, indicated that the group is willing to go beyond compelling companies to voluntarily take action on pay inequality by using its "enforcement powers to address any persistent and significant problems".

However, Charles Cotton of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) told Personnel Today that such "quick fix" solutions "will not work".
