Government 'should expand private sector jobs before making cuts'The government must focus on expanding the private sector jobs market in order to aid the country's economic recovery, a report suggests.

Business secretary Vince Cable yesterday outlined the new government's intention to cut the amount of legislative red tape that he said had been "choking off enterprise for too long" in order to help British businesses to recover following the recession.

The government is also planning to reduce public spending by more than £6 billion over the next year, a move which many fear will result in widespread job losses in the public sector.

However, according to the Cut, Tax, Grow? report by the Work Foundation, the key to stimulating economic growth is to first of all generate more employment opportunities in the country's private sector.

The number of unemployed people in Britain will continue to rise should the government first impose job cuts in the public sector, the Work Foundation fears.

Ian Brinkley, director of the Knowledge Economy programme at the body, said: "Any successful deficit reduction strategy must encourage growth and jobs and this has so far received little attention in the public debate."
