Sick days 'at lowest level on record'The number of days taken by employees as sick leave dropped to its lowest level on record in 2009, new research released today (June 7th) has revealed.

According to the latest Confederation of British Industry (CBI)/ Pfizer Absence and Workplace Health Survey, the rate of absence among staff dropped to an average of 6.4 days each last year, in comparison to 6.7 in 2007.

This figure is at its lowest since the study began in 1987, but sickness absence still cost employers around £16.8 billion throughout the 12-month period as there were still a combined total of 180 million days taken off due to illness.

Delays to teamwork and reductions in customer service are among the factors which adversely affect a company's performance when staff members are absent, the report stated.

Many firms across the UK are currently implementing plans to deal with the expected increase in the amount of sickness absence as World Cup fever hits the country when the month-long tournament gets underway on June 11th.
