Businesses in the City of London and elsewhere in the UK must begin to take into account changes in employee attitudes, as an increasing number of people intend to stay with one company for their entire careers, as a result of the downturn. This is according to Donna Miller, HR director with Enterprise Rent-A-Car, who told HR Magazine that failure to do this could lead to reduced productivity and increased staff disaffection. She noted that many companies have medium-term approaches to training and development, adding that few think about encouraging people to spend their entire working lives with them at the initial recruitment stage. Ms Millar went on to recommend organisations to adapt policies, citing research from the Association of Graduate Recruiters revealing that increasing staff retention from 50 per cent to 70 per cent would save £160,000 if 1,000 employees are taken on each year. Her comments follow results from the 2010 IRS study on staff turnover rates, indicating 53 per cent of managers believed the recession had an impact on the numbers joining and leaving their operations during 2009.
