Coalition government to axe retirement age of 65 PDF Print E-mail
Coalition government to axe retirement age of 65The coalition government is planning not only to axe the default retirement age of 65 but to speed up proposals to increase the state pension age.

The change could be good news for those in mature aged jobs or people looking for 50+ jobs at the moment, given the economic climate.

Axing the limit of 65 will mean employers can no longer force staff to retire once they reach this age and, according to work and pensions secretary Iain Duncan Smith, this is a very positive step for the nation's labour market.

He told the Daily Telegraph that because people are living longer and healthier lives than ever before, the last thing anyone wants is to lose such valuable skills and experience.

"We will reward their hard work with a decent state pension that will enable them to enjoy quality of life in their retirement," Mr Duncan Smith added.

The news comes on the back of widespread public sector spending cuts announced in this week's emergency Budget.

I request the Coalition Government to abolish default retirement age immediately. Abolition of default retirement age will give employees the choice to work as long as they are able to. Scrapping the default retirement age will be good for those who want to carry on working and good for the country as it will boost tax revenues and reduce welfare payments.
