Migration limit to be imposed by coalition governmentThe government has announced that it intends to scale net migration back to tens rather than hundreds of thousands, with one method of doing so being to restrict the number of migrants coming to work in the UK from outside Europe.

Home secretary Theresa May made the announcement, which is likely to affect those from outside the country seeking positions in broadcast sales and City of London jobs, among others.

Due to come into effect on July 19th, the interim measures include a cap on the number of Tier One migrants, as well as increasing the level of points required by highly skilled non-European Union personnel from 95 to 100.

"This government believes that Britain can benefit from migration but not uncontrolled migration," Ms May remarked, adding that she understands how important "attracting the brightest and the best" is in ensuring "strong economic growth" but "unlimited migration" puts extra pressure on public services.

Another move recently made by the Tory-Lib Dem partnership was the axing of the default retirement age, while speeding up proposals to increase the state pension age.
