Call made for introduction of training wagePeople intending to embark on a career change, be it in sales management or a payroll job, may soon find they are paid to train as a call has been made to introduce a basic wage of £2.50 an hour - the same as apprentice rate.

The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development made this proposal off the back of research revealing that 37 per cent of all internships are without a remuneration package, People Management reports.

Speaking regarding the move, skills adviser Tom Richmond noted that this amount would reflect any contributions made by such workers while "addressing concerns over reductions in the number of internship opportunities that may result from all interns being paid the same minimum wage".

His remarks follow those made recently by Stephen Overell of The Work Foundation, who stated that unemployed people need to be offered more training schemes to help them get back into work.
