CIPD: Firms must be well organised after recessionBritish businesses must retain a strong sense of organisational and commercial awareness in order to cope effectively with any future financial problems, an expert has said.

According to Dr John McGurk, adviser on learning and talent development at the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), both small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and larger firms must take similar precautions in the aftermath of the global economic downturn.

"You need to know how your business makes money or how it serves its customers. You need people who understand that," he commented.

A survey conducted last month by Egon Zehnder International found that around one in twenty companies in the UK feel confident that they have the correct resources internally to meet any forthcoming financial challenges.

The study - entitled Resilience - involved questioning 800 board-level managers and revealed that the primary concern among bosses was centred on the knock-on effects of the widespread governmental budget cuts.
