Nick Clegg has pledged to help businesses in the UK escape from the perceived excessive amount of regulation surrounding them. The deputy prime minister said in a speech last week (July 1st) that the Conservative-Liberal Democrat alliance is determined to cut the amount of red tape that has, he remarked, stunted the growth of British firms - ranging from nationwide corporations to SMEs - for several years. Business secretary Vince Cable commented last month that the government would seek to end the "deluge of new regulations" introduced over the course of the 13-year Labour administration in order to stop "choking off enterprise". A committee, which is chaired by Mr Cable, has been set up in order to monitor the introduction of new regulations. And Mr Clegg has insisted that this policy will be implemented effectively and added that the point of a new website being set up for businesses to suggest which rules they want and which they do not was "to get Whitehall out of the driving seat".
