Many employees throughout the City of London and across the nation are leaving themselves financially unprotected should they be unable to work, new research has shown.According to a report conducted by Unum - which questioned people in a wide range of positions including accountancy jobs - around one in five employees in the UK are underprepared for a situation whereby they were rendered unable to work due to unforeseen circumstances. Back-up plans such as insurance policies as income protection or being able to rely on a family member should an issue - such as illness - arise meaning they were not fit enough to fulfil their duties are not as common as they should be, the study states. However, the average worker indicated that they would only be able to survive for around four weeks if they did not have the benefit of their full monthly salary. Marco Forato, Unum's chief marketing officer, commented that it is concerning that so many people "are living on a knife edge when it comes to financial protection". Meanwhile, law firm Pannone has called on businesses such as SMEs to stop using pre-employment health questionnaires now ahead of the new Equality Act which comes into force in October.
