SME tax review 'a positive thing'The fact that tax on small businesses within the City of London and throughout the country is to be reviewed is a positive step, the Chartered Institute of Taxation (CIOT) said yesterday (July 20th).

Under new regulation, firms - including those which may offer accountancy jobs in the East End or West End - will have their taxation payments looked into by the Office of Tax Simplification, which will study legislation such as the IR35 and the treatment of contractors.

And Colin Ben-Nathan, chairman of the CIOT's employment taxes sub-committee, has remarked that scrutiny of the IR35 legislation is overdue and should be welcomed by companies up and down the UK.

He commented that a member of staff's status should be based on their legal position in employment law rather than the British tax system.

Meanwhile, the Federation of Small Businesses has called on the government to do more in order to help the country's private sector to get back on its feet following the global economic downturn.
