DRA to be scrapped from October 2011People seeking employment opportunities such as accountancy jobs in the City of London might be interested to note that the government has announced the end of the default retirement age (DRA).

As of October 2011, the DRA of 65-years-old will be scrapped altogether following a six-month period of readjustment and phasing out, which is scheduled to begin next April, it was revealed yesterday (July 29th).

This measure is designed to help increase flexibility in the country's working environment following the global economic downturn as well as encouraging people to make up their own minds as to when they want to stop working.

At present, employers are legally allowed to make their members of staff retire when they reach the age of 65 regardless of an individual's circumstances. However, this will no longer be the case in around 14 months' time.

This possibility of increased flexibility may be welcomed by a number of employees, as research by PricewaterhouseCoopers earlier this year revealed that this practice was more highly prized by most workers than material perks such as bonuses.
