CIPD applauds DRA decisionThe Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) has praised the government's decision to remove the default retirement age (DRA) as this measure will be to the benefit of workers in all sectors across the City of London and the rest of the UK.

It was revealed last week (July 29th) by the Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition that the DRA - which currently allows employers to make their staff members retire at the age of 65 - will be removed altogether as of October 2011 following a six-month phasing out period which is scheduled to begin in April next year.

This announcement has been met with a mixed reaction from businesses, with many seemingly concerned about the effect this may have on their ability to control their own internal recruitment policies.

However, the CIPD has applauded the policy and Dianah Worman, diversity adviser with the organisation, stated that "the abolition of the DRA will help encourage better management, which should bring a productivity boost for many employers".
