Employers 'must do more to improve worker morale'Employers running organisations such as SME firms in the City of London must seek to manage morale in their workplace more effectively if they are to ensure that levels of productivity remain high in the aftermath of the global economic downturn, an expert has said.

Recent research published by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) discovered that satisfaction among members of staff across all sectors in the UK has fallen by around a quarter - 24 per cent - in the last year or so.

And Catherine Ellwood, consultant at OPP, has commented that the downward trend on this figure may continue due to the stresses and strains of the post-recession era unless companies take action towards improving the atmosphere of their working environment.

Indeed, many employees have admitted to feeling the pressure of an extra workload after the fiscal crisis, with plenty saying they no longer take breaks at work.

"Often the real value of a workforce can be the things they are prepared to do above and beyond the day job and businesses should do more to ensure that they do not lose this," she said.
