Research: Many SMEs looking to recruitMany SME firms in the City of London and throughout the rest of the UK are expecting to expand over the coming months, new research has revealed.

According to the Sage UK Omnibus survey, which questioned 1,500 smaller businesses throughout June, some 40 per cent are anticipating that their firm will grow in the near future, with 30 per cent also indicating their intention to recruit new members of staff in the next six months.

And in what might be positive news for older job-seekers, just five per cent of this figure is expected to be new graduates as businesses instead look to more experienced candidates.

Brendan Flattery, managing director of the small business division at Sage, commented that it is "very positive" that this high number of entrepreneurs feel that they are well-placed to experience growth in the foreseeable future.

"It appears that SMEs are prioritising recruiting people who have gained real work experience," he added.

Meanwhile, the Office for National Statistics revealed yesterday that the number of people in employment in the UK increased by 0.3 per cent in the second quarter of the year.
